In normal service, the text was burned by 
the stylus so that the text appeared black 
on the gray-ish paper. 

The paper was a black conductive backing with 
a gray front surface applied; the conductive 
backing made contact with the shiny metal 
cylinder and the stylus, with a very high voltage 
spark, actually 'blew away' the gray surface 
to expose the black backing for the black text 
(or graphic) info. 

And yes, they really polluted the surrounding air; 
these days, no doubt the WU local office staffs 
would have a lawsuit filed for dangerous working 
conditions!
