The mention of the Western Union DeskFax brings back memories of another 
fax system that tried (and failed?) in the 1970s- Graphic Sciences. The 
interesting thing was the company went around to consumer electronics 
repair shops recruiting them to maintain the machines. They worked well 
enough under ideal conditions, but  were too sensitive to noise and the 
telephone  connection had to be top quality.  They used a treated paper 
and had a blower system to capture and trap the fumes in a filter 
cartridge. I don't think anyone was ever really pleased with them,  I 
last worked on one in 1975 and they were showing up in droves at 
hamfests within a couple years. There was a lot of equipment, especially 
consumer electronics, in the late 60s early 70s that worked, but just 
barely.  Total failures were easy to find and repair, but it was 
practically impossible to get from fair functioning to good. Everything 
was built on the thin edge.
