[GreenKeys] very cool Hell Feldfernschreiber demo

The AWA Museum has a prototype of the M17 from about 1925-30. The
engineer that worked on it was E. E. Kleinschmidt.

Early tests in the 1920s with 5-bit TTYs over radio were not very
reliable. It was felt that the Hellschriber system would be more robust.
But when AT&T took over Teletype Corp. in 1930, the project was shelved.
In the late 1930s, the program was apparently revived, the printer
simplified and put into production.  The major market was apparently a
printer for police cars.

The M17 prototype used the regular the TTY inked-ribbon on spools. The
mechanism to advance & reverse the ribbon was the most complicated part
of the printer. The 1938 version is much simplified with apparently an
inked sponge wetting the helix.

For more information about the Hellschriber, see

There are details on the Teletype Corp equipment at

> Its original purpose was to be a mobile printer because it is such a simple printing mechanism (the original dot-matrix printer).  But I think most of the M17 units were used to monitor German Hell transmissions during WWII. (Although Teletype Corp did make a Hell transmitter that converted a 5-bit Baudot tape to Hell format)
