[GreenKeys] Oddity on the bay

I also have an old wind-up Instructograph. Found it at the Western Carolina
hamfest a good many years ago and only paid a few bux for it as I remember.
Only have one yellowed tape with it, don't remember if it is American Morse
or Continental code. I think it came with an instruction book also. Makes a
nice conversation piece. A friend's dad (now SK) was an operator/station
manager with Postal Telegraph (and later WU). Wonder if he ever used one?
His daughter said that he went to "telegraph school" in Sandersville, GA
possibly in the 1920's.

?? I have two and a bunch of Continental Morse tapes. Some came with a
built in oscillator, rather crude design from the schematic in the
instruction book. Also some had electric motors instead of the wind up phono
motor. American Morse tapes are hard to come by for some reason. These
things were advertised at least as late as the 1950s. I was just looking at
a 1951 QST with ads for the Instructograph, the Teleplex and the Gardner
machine. The Instructograph is the only one I've actually used. Its crude
but works. Both of mine are the plain vanilla crank up kind.

?? Your Nacometer looks like an Instructograph but I wonder
about the spools. On mine the take up side has a drive pin with a
cut out for it on the spools. At some point I found the patent
for the Instructograph. I will see if I can turn it up in my
files and post it.

Dear group.

I have spent some time, trying to understand what the German company
Teleprint did with the electronics in 33ASR.

And I think I am starting to get my head around it.

There still a few things, that is pretty unclear, However I am getting
there, hopefully.

Please don't get upset if I am not using the correct names on the various
items, I'll hope you will understand it anyway

Inside the CCU there is 5 PCB's

BS270 Local line PSU (I assume)

BS230 Selector solenoid amplifier

BS263 Automatic motor control

BS241 Reader PSU

BS292 Remote control card (well, that's what I call it anyway.

The local/Line switch has only two positions, local or line.

There is two additional single throw switches on the CCU fase-plate,
Power-switch and a Reader Switch.

Keyboard, printer etc seems to bee box standard, However, the unit is for
the European market, hence 50 HZ, but printing on the motor says "Only 60
Hz"

Since the motor runs slower (3000 RPM instead of 3600), I would imagine that
the gear-train has been altered from standard.

The lever on the reader has three positions ON, Auto and Released.

There is no means provided to switch the unit of, once connected to the
power outlet it is always on, obviously it means that the selector magnet is
always engaged

When the printer is energized, it is reset, I.e it runs until the Selector
magnet has been energized and all clutches actuated and the rotor is
positioned on the STOP-bit area.

The motor-control board take three signals, one from the Selector amplifier,
One from the On-switch and finally one from the reader.

The motor control board automatically shuts down the motor after approx. 5
minutes, if there is no activity.

So, starting I local mode, there is two ways to start up the printer, either
by pushing the ON-button, or inserting a tape in the tape-reader and setting
the reader to ON.

When pushing the ON-button, a pulse is generated (depending how long you
hold the button) the pulse is forwarded to the motorcontrol board connection
2 (MOTOR_ON).

The pulse triggers the timed self-hold made up by transistors T203/T204,
Capacitors C206/C207, resistors R207/P201 and Diode D209.

The motor will now operate for approximately 5 minutes after the latest
event, ie character printed etc. It is not possible to turn the motor off.

A new 5-minutes delay is generated every time the Selector magnet is
operated, this is controlled by the connection 3 on the motor card.

In local mode the reader is started when the Reader Button is depressed
(labelled Leser/Schritt).

The motor is started by the number 12 connection on the motor board.

This seems also been happening if a tape is put into the reader, and that
cannot be correct, and I need to investigate this further.

Anyway.

In OnLine-mode, the printer is normally resting, it is actuated with a 24V
signal to the relay on the BS292 card.

This signal starts up the reader, and if a tape is loaded it will read the
whole tape, and the printer will then stop after 5 minutes of inactivity.

When online the printer can be started with the Auto/Man button as well, but
not from the reader switches.

Ill hope this makes some sense.

Is there anyone having a similar unit, with the same electronics, please get
in touch with me.

There is still some things I don't understand, and I am not sure if it is
complete, I have referenced the schematic for a Teleprint 390, however thee
is some differences

I am not 100% sure on how the transmit section and receive works, amongst
other things since I have more component, more switches compared to the 390
schematic,

as well as some parts on the 390 schematics is missing in mine.

With best regards

Tomas Larsson

Hi gang:

Just want to let you know that at 1400 EDST today, Wed., 4/22 there will be
a rather large intricate multiple overstrike picture sent on Autostart for
the purpose of testing Paul Heller's reperf.

It will take little over an hour to do so if you want to turn off your
printers and reperfs to save paper and tape please do so.

Thank you for your understanding.

PS - this caronavirus sucks!

Hi gang:

This was sent to me and since I am unfamiliar with foreign teleprinters I am
posting it to GK. I think this is where it was to go originally.

Hi all, first time on Greenkeys. I am based in the UK with a wide range of
interests in old Tech. Recently I was in a position to buy a Siemens T37h
and a Siemens T.send 61a. The plan is to get these working as a closed loop
system incorporating an "Ardiuo" which a friend is building for me. I plan
to use this for educational demonstrations together with my home made
"Enigma" demo model which I have been working on for the last 3 years along
side other projects. I am now glad to say I can now code and decode with it.
The T37h came to me with a bit of damage to the carriage which has been
repaired. The problem is in adjusting it for successful operation. As all
the manuals on the internet are either in German or Dutch photo copy posts
its difficult. What I really need is some guidance as most of the functions
are ok but it has a few disorders. Any help will be appreciated. Thank
goodness for projects in this time of lockdown. Keep safe all. Best regards

Greetings --

I'd like ask for advice of fellow Greenkeyers.

I have a Bell System Model 15 that sits on a home brew table with casters I
made from wood scrapes about about 25 years ago. The casters makes the TTY
mobile, but in a way it's *too* mobile when it's typing. It wants to go
for a random walk. I need to swap out the casters with wheels that include
locking brakes.

Here's a link a photo of my two TTY machines, the Model 15 and the
Frankenstein 28RO (Frankenstein due to it's apparent creation from various
spare parts by some third-party TTY service entity).
http://ad7i.net/images/tty-200423.jpg

I've been thinking about putting the 28RO on wheels but haven't done so
because the unit feels very top heavy. There's nothing in the cabinet
except for the motor and typing unit, high in the cabinet. To put the 28RO
on wheels I am considering making a small platform on wheels, with the
platform composed of 3/4" plywood for the 28RO to sit on, with some 3/4"
molding around the perimeter of the platform so the 28 can't vibrate off of
the platform, and then also add some concrete pavers to the open area of
the plywood platform to lower the center of gravity. And that got me to
thinking further....

It seems like Teletype had a solution for situation. Is there a Teletype
recommend way to put a Model 28 on wheels? One where would not feel like
it might tip over? If not, do Greenkeyers have any suggestions about how I
might put a 28 on wheets? (something better than my plywood platform on
wheels with extra ballast resting on the platform)?

thanks,

Paul, ad7i
