Scientifically speaking, that's what you'd expect with an island continent 
viz: life evolving in its own way.  I think the land-bridge to Asia 
disappeared about, what, 100,000 years ago?  Relics of the First Peoples 
have been dated back to at least 60,000 years, making them the oldest 
continuous civilisation on the planet (despite colonial Britain's attempts 
to eradicate them; yes, I am British by birth).

Trivia: "macropod" literally means "big foot" in Latin, but has no 
relation to the Big Foot (we just have Yowies instead, not to mention the 
dreaded drop-bear).
