Guys, I joint at some point after it became apparent in the 1980s that the PC replaced the teleprinter for hams and others. I went on a quest to preserve machines. Particularly from my ancestor's company. I put up "wanted" signs at hamfests. The stuff rolled in like crazy.........
My only visit inside SCM Kleinschmidt in Deerfield, IL, when they were still making teleprinters, was with my Dad. It was on a Saturday, I was around 9 years old - circa 1964. We were in the manufacturing building. In the back of that building was a life test area with machines printing, punching and reading: "the quick brown fox...". There was a fellow with a cart picking up paper filled cardboard barrels and reloading machines with new. The clatter was increadible - lots of machines in operation.
On the following Monday morning, Dad got a rash of s*** for bringing in a person, me, without a security clearance. ~90% of KL business was for the US Army.........
Following my preservation success, much of the gear and documentation is now at the American Wireless Association Museum under the watchfull eye of fellow Greenkeyer Duncan Brown. As you likely know, Duncan is curator of AWA Museum data communication section. The preservation effort continues in very good hands........
I am in touch with the present day Kleinschmidt Inc. It has been an independent company again since the 1980s. Kl Inc. now provides computer services an evolutoon from Kl Labs old rail car location business. The comptroller and I are striving to get all the company news letters. We have done some swapping and copying to get each of our collections to the same level. Still missing some. Kl Inc. Is still located in the 1950 engineering and administration building. The manufacturing buikding was demolished long ago........
My Greenkeys activity level is up and down. I still need to get a printer operational. You guys have been an remain are a huge help, I genuinely apprecite it.
