How did I get here?
CB Radio and Early Computers:
I have always been into electronics even from a young age. I really started into communications at about 12 with a CB radio and a 48” antenna mounted on the patio cover, it was about this time that I also had a Commodore 64 and taught myself basic programming. I moved up to an Apple Mac IIsi and found the local BBS world fun. I continued talking with my friends via the CB and Local BBS numbers until the internet came around and the BBS systems faded. The CB chugged on but it to eventually went by the wayside. Besides a Radio Shack scanner I did not do much with Wireless communications for a few years.
Then I joined the Navy:
I joined the Navy in 1999 as an Aviation Electronics Technician (NEC-6704) and made E5 (AT2) in the 5 years I was in. I worked on Secure Communication systems specifically JTIDS for F-14 and E2C aircraft. This is where I really saw digital meet wireless as well as crypto secured communications. After I got out I started restoring old radios as a hobby, Philcos Trans-Oceanic’s ect… which lead me into Shortwave Radio.
Shortwave Radio:
I discovered all the interesting world of stuff that was still out there even as late as 2005-2006. I restored a couple old National Receivers NC57s (At this time I lived in Washington State, the rain gave me plenty of time for indoor activities) I realized that there was so much more, I could hear CW and strange noises floating around the airwaves. I also really wanted to switch my hobby to something more substantial, so I started into Navy Gear. I found a RBB w/power supply for I think $75. I bought more and more (Still No License at this time).
Teletype and License:
I had discovered that some of the noises heard could be Teletype, this combined with my collection of vintage Radio and Military Communication Books. Since I like electro mechanical stuff I started looking around. Figured at this time I might as well work to get my license so I could transmit as well as receive. Picked up my Tech Ticket then my General a few months later. I have been on Greenkeys for I think 3-4 years now, When I found that Mark (NF6X) lived only a few miles from me and was also an avid Military Collector I reached out to say hello and found a M28 KSR that he was willing to part with and here I am.
