I kind of got thrown into it.
my jr year in high school, my father was working in the oil field in
aberdeen scotland and since I didn't know him, I flew over there.
he got transferred a month or two later to port gentil gabon, west africa
so we moved down there and I ended up working for AMF Tuboscope for a short
while and taking my days off in the canary islands at las palmas.

I came back to texas around december and had missed too much of my sr year
in high school so I got my ged at schreiner college in kerrville and headed
to ozona tx to work in the oil field.
began to hear stories of a boom in bakersfield ca and since I had never
been anywhere, I headed that way with intentions of seeing vegas and
hollywood on the way.

stopped in vegas and they took most of my money, and I never did see a sign
for hollywood when I got to la so I ended up sleeping in my car on a beach
at port hueneme, ca for a week or two.
rather than ask for money to come home on, I ended up walking into the
first recruiting station I found which was navy where they asked me what I
wanted to do and I told them I wanted to work on radios as I knew
electronics was the future.

They made me into a radioman which is where I found teletypes and found out
I was good with technology.

To pass away the deadtime while out at sea, I eventually ended up taking an
electronics course by CIE and begin building heathkits.
Eventually a teletype broke and I taught myself how to repair them.

Here I am some 40 years later and I have a model 28 ksr and once I get the
time to get it working (loop supply, chasing wires, etc.) I'm going to try
and hook it up to a arduino to monitor some aquaponics/solar stuff I want
to experiment with and use it to do my news youtube videos I seem to spend
all my time working on as I think it would be a great intro kind of like
they used to do on news shows where they said something like "hot off the
press"

Got interested in the swl portion of it while tuning in all those distant
radio stations while on the mid watch and later got into navy mars for a
few years out in the midland/odessa area.
