Yes they do. And under "normal" circumstances, you add a
resistance in series with the new silicon diode to drop the
voltage a bit.
But, that only works with a fairly constant load like a radio.
Since what your working with is open circuit voltage, that
isn't going to work.
However, you have to add some resistance in series with the
diode to limit the charging current into the filter capacitor.
Then, you're going to have to adjust the output voltage with
the transformer primary taps.
Also, 1N4007 diodes are only good for one amp.
