That might be something to think about. I am not sure how much power the device could handle (dissipate) before getting too hot. Many of the 3 terminal regulators can only handle a few watts. It probably would work if say a 1000 to 1500 ohm resistor was in series with it.
I had not looked at them in a long time and then they were only rated for about 1 to 2 watts and under 40 volts.
