One reason it lasted a long time was that teleprinters were expensive and
needed skilled maintenance. Especially in the 1910-1920 time frame
operators were a lot cheaper than teleprinters. Message volume had to
reach a certain level before a teleprinter was considered to be worth
its cost. Of course by the 1990s operators were a lot more costly than
teleprinters, but still were more resilient. And could do other kinds
of work when message volume did not demand their services.
