The knob on the side of the reader itself (made by Addmaster) sets the tape guides to handle 5, 6 or 8 channel tape.  I have the Addmaster reader module, just the reader, in my junk box.  If anyone needs one, just ask.

If I recall correctly, the reader has a stepping motor for tape advance, plus LED-photodiode pairs for each of 8 data channels.  While it works with every tape width, there's no provision for offset sprocket holes.
