I got a reply from Bob Reek, as follows

Jim,

    Sorry to be so late in answering your note.  I think this was a R&D
model that I built preceding the development of the Dataspeed product 
line. 
The reader was probably a CX.  (I assisted WJZ when he developed the high
speed reader that became the AX model). BX and CX were improved models.

I just wrote back to him saying that the electronics package looks like
the AN/FGC-5 multiplex stuff, which was tube rather than transistor,
so that would be too early for the CX reader.
