I would say that you are NOT all wet with 
your ideas ... but you are using circuitry that 
was not even dreamed of in 1957 or 1945 !! 

Nothing wrong with that, except for the 
folks who are trying to keep accurate nostalgia. 

What makes your idea practical is the fact 
that you are 'over driving' the current at first, 
which makes it rise fast, and then cutting it off. 

Also, the idea of dropping the current is along 
the lines of the holding selector magnet ... the 
cam pushed the armature against the magnet 
mechanically, thus not requiring as much FAST 
build up of current ... once pushed, almost any 
current can hold it against the magnet.
