[GreenKeys] A Little More TWX History

Resend with FROM address acceptable to list...

I remember the DeskFax. I think there was some amateur use of it. I think
WU intended it as a low cost replacement for messengers. But, the fax
image, as mentioned below, only went from the local WU office to/from the
customer and not customer to customer. These faxes were pretty slow, so
using them for long distance would have been expensive. Even when fax
machines were introduced, as I recall, it took 7 minutes to transmit a
page using analog FM on the phone line with no compression.

I used to do contract work for Alden (I think that's the company name) in
MA. They made wet paper fax machines for distributing weather maps to the
FAA Flight Service Stations. This was linear FM over a phone line. A
rotating drum with a helix on it provided horizontal scan while the paper
was pulled up by another motor. The helix would pass current through the
paper to turn it brown.

There is still weather fax on HF. You can hear it and see the resulting
weather map at http://kphsdr.com:8076/ on a Kiwi SDR. Under extension,
select FAX. In the fax decoder window, select a station in a region. Right
now I'm listening to Station: Pt. Reyes, NMC US which is at the same site
as KPH, which is where this SDR is.
