And it's ironic that W.U. spent tons of money on fax development a few
years earlier, but the fax that ate their lunch had next to nothing in
common with their developments.
Carterfone decision and other legal challenges forced the telephone
companies to allow connection of customer-owned equipment to the switched
network.
Development of thermal printing, and that based a lot on semiconductor
fabrication technology helped make fax machines cheap.
Also Japanese expertise in related fields such as copiers, paper
handling, making machines mostly out of plastic
Microprocessors and other advances in integrated circuit electronics
