This pile reminds me of the parts I bought to reconstruct my first
R-390 in 1971 while stationed at Griffiss Air Base. I paid $20.00 for
it all, which was a fraction of what they sold for then, and had many
evenings of work to bring it back to life. The surplus dealer had a
"friction fire" in part of his complex, and the firefighters ripped the
pole barns down to douse them. The owner then pulled the walls and roof
fragments away from the toppled shelves and invited hams and other
techie geeks to pore through the remains for treasures. He sold them to
us at very low prices, especially if we were young and in the military.
Rust on mechanisms can be spectacular but surprisingly easy to clean.
Initially the lifers and officers gave me and others a lot of crap about
having "government property", until I insisted they see the pile and
showed them my receipt from the dealer. Weirdly, they completely
reversed their view of what I was doing and one of them even offered to
"help"me with any parts I could not salvage. A few months later I made
connections and found that an R-388 or 390 (or a model 28!) that had
slipped through the cracks was available for patience and two bottles of
Chivas Regal. The price this fellow is asking is beyond reason, and even
if it were $20.00 for the entire pile, there are very few people
interested in this stuff that have the skill, time, and patience to
restore it. Regrettably, it will probably be scrapped.
