Their son was a tech at the company where I worked in the 80s, and he 
ended up quitting to work for the family business doing private payphone 
conversions (worked like a pay phone but on a regular phone line and the 
$ went to the business owner). Another thing today's kids wouldn't 
understand...

I think the simple explanation here is the teletypes came as part of a 
huge acquisition and they didn't have any interest in them or space to 
store them indoors.
