On this day (3rd Nov 1906) the International Radiotelegraph Conference in Berlin selected SOS as the international distress signal, replacing CQD (CQ Distress) which could be confused with CQ. It does not mean "Save Our Souls" etc, but rather is a distinctive pattern. -- Dave VK2KFU
