There are a few boutique print shops and small newspapers that still use
Linotypes, as well as high end book publishers that still print with
metal type. Offset printing has improved greatly since I took printing
in high school over fifty years ago, so it is satisfactory for most
applications today. However, for books intended to be read long term
such as novels, there is a difficult to describe clarity and readability
metal type or letterpress delivers that offset does not. It does come at
a price, however, letterpress printed books with leather covers and top
quality bindings can sell new for hundreds of dollars.
