There was TTY encryption during WWII in the form of the one-time-tape
PYTHON/SIGTOT systems.  The AN/FGQ-1  originally mixed (XOR'ed) a
physical "key" tape with the clear text tape to encrypt the message.
Then the SIGCUM/ GORGON/ TSEC/KW-2 rotor machine replaced the physical
key tape.

The AWA Museum, has a Teletype Corp. prototype (that came from the
Teletype Corp. Museum) of a TSEC/KW-2/SIGCUM box with a tape reader
added, which implies the mixing was done in the in the SIGCUM box. The
NSA Museum has a production model of this prototype, but I haven't been
able to get any more information about it from them. (Time to try again.)

During WWII, Teletype Corp. manufactured various encryption devices
(including the off-line SIGABA) for the military.
