The Western Union main office here in Syracuse was still using model 28s
in the early 1980s. In the mid 1990s they tore everything out of the
equipment floor, but left a surprising amount of power distributuion
equipment in the basement. As a side light, does anyone remember or ever
use a Western Union messenger call box in a hotel? All of our large
hotels and office buildings were within a few blocks of the Western
Union office, so a courier could easily and quickly accept and deliver
telegrams. As far as reviving that kind of service, it might be legally
forbidden. Western Union is an ancient company and protected it's
business turf very well, and may have never relenquished it's claim on
delivering telegrams with human couriers.
