Must have been a really slow night!

Like learning how to flip a knot in a patch cord… Did you ever learn to do that? I used to be able to do it, but can’t now.

When things got quiet while on a midnight Radio Watch, (midnight to 0700) we occasionally had

'contests' to see if someone could drop a period in a zero while the carriage returned to the left

margin. A few guys had developed a technique for this. It worked just fine, a zero on a particular

space, and at or near the end of the line, an 'upshift' followed by a period ( . ) and then a CR,

with high hopes that it would land inside the zero.

A 'formula' was great until the Teletype repair guy did his routine maintenance and oiled everything

and made other adjustments. Then, one had to start over to find the 'magic spots' to successfully

drop the period inside the zero.

back in the 50s when RTTY was used a lot,
the standard protocol was to always send
2 CRs followed by a LF at the end of each
line just for that problem.
