For comparison, check the 1971 & 1981 prices here -

$275 for a working 28KSR but that's in 1971 dollars back when I bought a
new Pontiac Firebird for $3000.
People can ask anything they like on eBay. The big-bucks posters are maybe
hoping that a movie production needs one and doesn't care about cost. Or
are just ignorant of the fact that a rusty 28ASR is not as highly prized as
a beautifully restored 33ASR lusted after by vintage computer collectors.
Whatever - don't worry about it.
The great thing about eBay is that it offers items that would otherwise get
trashed.
I have picked up several oddball Teletype items via eBay, like an Inktronic
printer and some equipment and documents related to tape relay
Folks here on Greenkeys are as generous and helpful a bunch of people as
you will ever find. Just last month Paul Heller and Doc Terrell distributed
a bunch of free machines to new owners.
Over the last 8-10 years I've been given a number of M28 machines by the
kind folks here. Of course you have to be willing to travel some or pay
shipping. And you've got to be willing to clean and repair - but that's an
extremely rewarding learning experience in itself.
Have Fun!
