 Not necessarily...  :-)
Here's my TWX machine connected to my desktop PC.

Although not shown in the video, the call control unit and 101C modem are still intact, in fact, I've dialed into the unit and communicated with it through the modem...  The answer back feature still functions just fine, too.
Of course, I can't suppress printing while punching or reading a tape, but I don't really care about that.  I think there's a mechanical way to do that, that Wayne has posted before.
I simply tapped into the TxD / RxD signals going back and forth to the modem.  If anyone would like details, I'd be happy to provide them.  The circuit I used provides optical isolation but that's really not necessary - the 101C has very nice +/-20V power supplies; my circuit requires a separate 5V supply on the computer side.  Overly complicated, but that was just my mindset carrying over from working with my Model 15's 60 mA loop.  Been meaning to simplify the 33 i/f, but inertia being what it is...

It would be a shame to destroy this TWX teletype to make it computer ready. Plus you would need parts that are hard to come by.
But as is it is sadly only useful for a museum.

Just my opinion.
