Found the issue! But will be unable to repair on site.
The ribbon-guide mounting bracket (Ref. #10 on Fig, 90 of the TT-4 service manual) is loose but to retighten the two mounting screws (Ref. #9 on Fig. 90) at least the platen assembly will need to be removed. Fig. 90 is on page 110 of the TT-4 manual on Nick England's Navy Radio web site.

Yes, it could be the ribbon lift - I was going to mention that, but the thought never got as far as my fingers!
I don't remember the details of the adjustment, just that there is one.
Let us know how the texting works - I'd like to do something like that at the AWA museum.
