If using the mechanical tape, set the transmitter up for vox and use audio tones. A foot switch may help to go to transmit.
Most computers do not sent the CR/LF and LTRS that should be sent at each new line.
For computer contesting most are using sound card modems (whatever you want to call them) you do not have to be right on frequency with the transmitter and receiver, the audio processing of the computer does the work. Just hit the mark tone with the mouse and let the AFC take over in the computer. All you need to do is have the shift set 170 Hz.
For using a transceiver, I found an oscilloscope with the cross pattern makes it much easier to tune the receiver much quicker.

Nick,
You need a tape with DE K4NYW 599 NY NY NY (or your state) in it. Have it ready to go and of course you have hit Transmit on your radio and then type in the CQ ers call sign followed by your tape. Then stop the radio Transmit and see if they pick you up.
Its difficult to do in the early times of the contest but toward the end the CQ ers will be more desperate for a new contact.
My son was here and I made a contact with a ham in Alabama as described above. Sometimes the contesters will send a CR and a LF.
Also it helps if you have a local CR function and of course LF with the platen knob. You need three hands sometimes.
Its much easier when there is not a contest going.
Keep at it.
