My Dad told me long ago that a platen can be softened by sandblasting. It does not hurt the platen otherwise.

typewriter platens. All these rubber dressings have some really
foul smelling solvent in them. The Fedron worked for curing a
platen that was very slick. I've also used belt dressing, seems
like much the same stuff. Again, once the rubber has hardened up
and started to crack or rot there is no treatment that will save it.
The J.J. Short company recovers typewriter platens, I
suspect they do Teletype machines too. An e-mail would find out
their practice with this. They have a very good reputation among
typewriter collectors.

>> I have used rubber treatment including belt dressing on typewriter platens. They will get rid of gloss but don't really restore the rubber. If its cracked or lumpy the dressing does not affect it. All of these products small awful and should be used outdoors.
