The Fred Link Model 1498 was a VHF FM radio that became the AN/TRC-1 in
1943 and was used by the US Army to relay voice & TTY traffic.
See
https://books.google.com/books?id=yuxmAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA237&lpg=PA237&dq=1498+radio+teletype&source=bl&ots=DYh3-Upipg&sig=ACfU3U2Y6aCst5IQRs5egFBcllfEWL8P0Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjWsMe0-b3gAhWoT98KHZHLBSYQ6AEwG3oECAEQAQ#v=onepage&q=1498%20radio%20teletype&f=false
For TTY service, probably AFSK was fed into the mic input of the TX.
I believe that the AN/AGA-1, of about the same period also used AFSK,
since they said it would "work with any radio."
There is info on the AN/TRC-1 in NAVSHIPS 94200.1, section 9, so
apparently the Navy was using it?
Have fun,
Duncan
