A bit more on my story you might enjoy...
When I applied for the job at ITT WorldComm
I knew it was for Teletype Engineer ... so I 
figured why not have a job that's my hobby?!!

So when I was being interviewed, he asked me 
if I had any experience with Model 28 equipment... 
my honest response was "I built an ASR from parts!"
LOL 

Actually, when I was about 16 and in Army MARS 
we had a VP from Bell Labs who was active in our 
NJ MARS tty group.  One day he offered me: 
"If I give you an M28 ASR cabinet and a few 
boxes of parts, and the parts and adjustment 
manuals, and you put it all together and it works 
YOU CAN KEEP IT."

Well, that was like offering a Jaguar XKE to 
a teen !!   Quite an incentive to detract from 
doing homework every night.   ;))
