...I just can't help myself, I have to say something. There are several
options.
1. How about the method recommended to clean R-390 receivers on Dave Medley's
web site?
http://r-390.com. Near the bottom of the splash page -- cleaning and
restoration tips.
Essentially,
Break it into sections. Don't do the motor(!). Remove rubber parts.
Take it outside and hang on the clothes line pole. Put a flattened cardboard
box underneath.
Spray with WD-40. (This is fish oil and is safe.) [See the section on the RF
deck.]
Spray with Fantastik (Formula 409, if south of the Rockies).
Distilled water rinse.
Bake in the Arizona sun -or- Use the wife's oven when she's not looking.
I intend to try this on an IBM Selectric III.
2. Dishwasher. Bad idea.
I used the dishwasher to clean the plastic two piece intake manifold on a 2000
Ford 3.8. It took 3 sets of dishes before the food tasted right. My
incredibly patient wife was suprisingly thoughtful in her remarks about that
episode.
3. Find a kid to take it apart and put it back together. Then they can work
for Space-X.
They could do a ring job on some old engine, but the future is in space!
That's what I did in eighth grade, with a Western Union Model 104. I had the
manual. Laid it all out on the bench. Cleaned each part, measured it. A few
little parts. Spring gauge measurements. Oil-grease-oil. Ran like new.
Then the "TV Typewriter" book came out. Poop! I should have played with math
books in my spare time.
4. Solvents. Really bad idea.
We now know that Carbon Tetrachloride, TCE and Xylene cause brain damage,
cancer or asphyxiation.
Those are expensive consequences and take all the fun out.
I was using charcoal lighter fluid for awhile for cleaning bike parts, but
Kingsford straightened me out on that! Its for charcoal, silly!
5. Automotive degreasers.
I am told this accounts for a lot of cancer among old car enthusiasts.
So there you are. I recommend complete disassembly and reconstruction if one
is having a mid-life crisis and is tempted to have an affair. Just don't use
the dishwasher! ...Skip the cancer.

Hey there:
Jack K2TTY Hart (SK) used to recommend the dish washer when the XYL isn't
around.
I haven't tried it yet so I couldn't tell you how good it works.

Hi
“Back in the day” there were shops that would dunk parts / assemblies in
various baths
of now illegal to use solvents. Often the setup was designed for cleaning with
the
fluid boiling at the bottom of the tank and the vapor condensing on (and
dripping off of)
the device being cleaned. That way you only had “distilled” solvent
hitting the object.
Needless to say cleaning out the bottom of the tank was *not* a fun task ….
been
there / done that …. yuck ….
Would “modern” solvents be ok? ….. maybe yes … maybe no
How would you set up a vapor system with them? ( no, you don’t … trust me
on that part)
Do you *really* want to go to all that hassle? Even with modern solvents, you
have disposal issues.
Indeed, after this process (or anything close to it) there is no lube left.
Absolutely
everything needs to be carefully lubricated before it is run.
Last time I did a 26 ( maybe 1966 ??) I used a spray bottle of cleaner. The
“gunk” ran out on
the grass. That was a very different era.
