Hi
“Back in the day” there were shops that would dunk parts / assemblies in various baths
of now illegal to use solvents. Often the setup was designed for cleaning with the
fluid boiling at the bottom of the tank and the vapor condensing on (and dripping off of)
the device being cleaned. That way you only had “distilled” solvent hitting the object.
Needless to say cleaning out the bottom of the tank was *not* a fun task …. been
there / done that …. yuck ….
Would “modern” solvents be ok? ….. maybe yes … maybe no
How would you set up a vapor system with them? ( no, you don’t … trust me on that part)
Do you *really* want to go to all that hassle? Even with modern solvents, you have disposal issues.
Indeed, after this process (or anything close to it) there is no lube left. Absolutely
everything needs to be carefully lubricated before it is run.
Last time I did a 26 ( maybe 1966 ??) I used a spray bottle of cleaner. The “gunk” ran out on
the grass. That was a very different era.
