That reminded me of the practice in the Raleigh AP bureau. Yes, the M15 and M20 mainshaft gear was afiber gear, as noted.
The techs put new fiber mainshaft gears in a container of oil, the same oil used for the rest of the machine.
The idea was to saturate the fiber gear with oil, so by the time we ever put one on a machine, the gear hadabsorbed oil and was pretty well lubricated for longer service.
