Well, folks, ITTY is still not well. The computer I was using crashed, so I substituted a new one.  It seems like the serial connection to the ST-8000A stops working after some time. All is well, and then the serial port hangs. The application is still running fine, merrily sending data to the RS-232 port with no errors, but the data is not flowing out. I have not put a scope on the port yet.

I cannot figure out why the RS-232 port stops transmitting, but am investigating. The new computer is an ASUS PN40.  Anyone have any experience with that computer?

In the meanwhile, I am rebuilding the old computer and will swap it back as soon as I can.
