The ones in the pictures look like they are wood. Some
broadcast plants I worked in used Bakelite blocks of the same
type. We called them Christmas tree blocks. The original plant
had been constructed with soldered joints (c.1950). The most
useful tool I had for them was a couple of wooden chop sticks.
The newer part of the plant used punch down terminals on what we
called 66 blocks. You could punch in the wires with pliers but
there was a correct tool for it. Also, those blocks were designed
for solid wire. They would work for stranded wire but not as
reliably.
