There are free certificates now. Exactly how to go about it will depend on how you're hosting the site, but the phrase you'll want to search for is "Let's Encrypt", which is a free service: https://letsencrypt.org/
A number of hosting services have support built in these days, and for other setups, there's a decent collection of instructions available here: https://certbot.eff.org/
So there's still some potential technical overhead, but thankfully the financial side of things is a lot more manageable than it used to be.
