That all sounds great and maybe someone else has a better board that we should
be doing instead. I designed this one to be cheap and pretty simple, and to cover
the majority of use cases (ie, raw 5-bit interface vs ascii translation, etc)
but maybe someone wants to do a run of the fancy one with built-in loop supply
or something? I'm sure not going to be insulted if someone decides to make a
better one!
If so i'd urge 1) allow the built-in inductive supply to be bypassed so you can use
it on a loop with multiple TTYs, and 2) include enough CPU to do ITA2-ascii
translation and stuff at least, so you have the option of not requiring host software
that does all that. And maybe 3) keep separate loops for transmit and receive so it
works with full duplex setups.
I priced mine at $35 which was my best before-the-fact guess at "cost" and came
pretty close, and I'd love to see another at-cost effort though I can understand if
someone needs to make a little money on it.
