Teletype indeed used synchronous motors, or speed-governed motors where
accurate power frequency is not available, as in the military running on
field generator sets.  I believe there are some variable motor speed
schemes based on the governed motors, replacing the governor with an
external circuit to sense the speed and adjust the power applied to the
motor accordingly.
