Hi Jeff,
Thanks for doing this!
Great to be able to look forward to this event in January. I hope that we get increased participation in 2019! I am definitely in....Who else will join the fun???
Yes, a great counterpoint to FT8! An entire spectrum of digital represented while realizing that there is no participation from ASCII terminals on HF Radio.

OK - I want to clarify:
- This was something that W5DT and I decided. I admit that perhaps we should have discussed it here first and I apologize for not doing that.
- I also apologize for not responding to WA3FRP right away. Work is.
- The ARRL doesn't care either way. I can ask them to put it back in, but the QST ship has sailed, and...
- Fundamentally this group is the community of participants in this overlay.
- If you all want to do the overlay again I'm am totally okay with it. At the end of the day it really is up to me since I present the results, and I am very happy to do this. We don't actually need anything in the rules to do this.
- Frankly I think having this overlay again will be a fun counterpoint to all the FT8 giddiness going on now (The FT8 mode has been added to the Roundup list of allowed modes.)
OK? - 73 jeff wk6i

What seems really strange about this is what I hear so many times from the "old timers" about how all this new "digital stuff" just isn't "real ham radio." This from the same folks that use a computer to emulate a real TTY, and they look down their noses at those of us that want to still use the real thing. And now after one year that aren't going to include a real TTY category. Just the "fake" stuff

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your reply and explanation. If I were to take the lead and sponsor the award going forward, is it too late to have the Electromechanical Overlay officially supported and advertised for 2019? Sorry to be late on this but I just saw the 2019 rules and was surprised that our Heavy Metal overlay was dropped after just one year. For example, CW has held a Straight Key night for years and I feel that it would be great to have something similar for our Heavy Metal teleprinters.
Thanks and 73,

hi Russ - I consulted with W5DT and his feeling was to drop it, so I asked ARRL/QST to remove it. In hindsight perhaps it would have been better to poll this group about it. I apologize for not doing that.
That said, if you submit your results for 2019 using the 2018 overlay, that goes to me, and I won't ignore it! Please do also send me your story/notes for the results article. I'll send out details before and after the contest.
The overlay last year was promoted here, in facebook groups, and was mentioned in QST on the contest announcement page. That's about all you can do with no ad budget. ;)
And I'm afraid very little in the way of contest results gets printed in QST these days. The overlay results do appear in the online full results on page 4: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/ContestResults/2018/2018%20RTTY%20Roundup%20-%20Full%20Results%20-%20Version%201_2.pdf
ARRL is often quite slow in getting plaques done. You can always contact w9jj at arrl.org to find out the status.

I am disappointed as it appears that the 2019 ARRL RTTY Roundup Contest Rules do not reference an Electromechanical Overlay. Is this an oversight? If not, let me note that there was very little promotion of the Overlay other than via Greenkeys AND there was no mention of the Overlay that I can find in the contest results printed in QST.
What happens if we submit our results for 2019 using the 2018 overlay? Do we get ignored?
Finally, I never received my plaque that W5DT sponsored. What happened there???
Thanks and 73
