[GreenKeys] Does anyone have any experience using the L-Com RS232 to Current Loop Converter with a Mod 33 Teletype?

John, I have a model 33 connected to the RS232 port of an iTelex unit through a black box 232/CLE converter so I know it will work.

(You should consider getting an iTelex system so you can talk to people from all over the world on your Model 33 TTY)

You need a 60 ma current loop to talk to the model 33, that's the first thing. Then, the next problem you are going to have is talking to the RS232 port of your computer, because you need 110 baud, and most USB to RS232 converters will not do this baud rate. You also need a setting on the USB to RS232 converter to select 7 data bits, because that is what the ascii code actually is on a model 33.

I was planning to try to connect my model 33 to my PC using a Brainbox model US-101, USB to RS232 converter (still using the Black Box current loop converter in front) because they have a driver for Windows 7 or 10 that will provide 110 baud and the 7 data bits you need.

Here is the link to the datasheet:

http://www.brainboxes.com/files/catalog/product/US/US-101/documents/US-101-datasheet.pdf

You can find them on ebay or Amazon for about $70

Let me know how things work out.

Ok I’ve gotten my Current Loop Converter adapter ( http://www.l-com.com/serial-converters-controller-cards-economy-rs232-to-current-loop-converter-with-4-pin-terminal-block
) and what I thought was the obvious way of connecting it doesn’t seem to result in success.

I’ve connected
1 <-> TTY Send pin 3
2 <-> TTY Send pin 4
3 <-> TTY Receive Positive Pin 7
4 <-> TTY Receive Negative Pin 6

Switches:
20ma                         DCE
RX Passive               TX Passive

I’ve got a nice RS232 Mini-Tester with LEDS to give me a good indication of communication and every combination of Null modem/RS232 Gender changer available, connecting it to a USB->RS2-2 adapter.

So far I’ve not had any success getting an indication that things are communicating. Has anyone else used this particular converter with success and can offer any advice?

Thanks in advance!

John Toebes
