Hey everyone, just wanted to give an update on my ebay ASR-33 story. The main problems seem to have been mostly related to EST - “eBay shipping trauma” ….

The good news is that we now have a working machine – now just fine tuning (dashpot adjustments, etc.) and of course, figuring out how to get my Black Box loop converter to talk RS232.

But I have to say a huge thank you for Wayne for tirelessly working through things with me, sending photographs, documentation, parts, patiently explaining (and re-explaining!) things to me… and of course getting me to understand the fundamental rules – (i) don’t rush (ii) use your eyes.
Have a great weekend!
Andy

Hi everyone- this is my first successful posting on Greenkeys. Thank you Gil for fixing my inability to properly register earlier this week. Anyway.... I recently emotionally purchased a modestly priced ebay Teletype<https://www.ebay.com/itm/Teletype-ASR-33-Teleprinter-Machine-VINTAGE/192506680051> ASR-33 which the seller claimed had run just fine before packing it up for me.

It is indeed seems in good cosmetic condition, both inside and out. I’ve done some gentle superficial cleaning and lubricating/greasing before powering up. Print head looked new, capacitors physically seemed good (from what my inexperienced eyes could tell.)

Anyway I threw caution to the wind and powered up. Chatters in on Line Mode (as expected) but also in Local Mode (shouldn't do that, right?) Also the keys feel "locked" and do not depress (so nothing types in local mode anyway.)

I’ve been reading non-stop and frankly I am not sure where I should begin. I'm a little afraid to tear open the keyboard if that's the first place to start.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of something on par with an Idiots Guide to “first steps” or general troubleshooting? I have some technical manuals which mostly explain assembly/disassembly and theory of operations.

Thanks in advance!
Andy
