I did that years ago with HP OMNIBOOKS:
They became REALLY CHEAP (like $20.oo) I loaded LINUX onto them
and set them up on a network - so I could talk to them from anywhere
in the house. They're still all running after about 18 years.
Their jobs:
o Announces when I get e-mail - in Morse code - plays subject.
o Sits in my stereo/computer cabinet, plays Dali-clock time.
o Decodes shortwave/ham RTTY, sends data to any other computer.
o Does ham radio logbook.
o Runs Windows-XP (still have a program that won't run anywhere else.
o In bedroom, acts just like I'm on the big computer down stairs.
o All weekly "TAR" backups are stored on it.
o Plays Bible passages in Morse code to me while I fall asleep.
Downside: SDG&E keeps sending me power bills with the note that
I'm using more power than other 2-people dwellings...

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made A LOT of people very angry
and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
