I have used some of the China solder wick and it works fine, if you have some liquid flux and give it a good coating just before using it.

It makes a big difference if you use plenty of flux when soldering. Get one of the syringes with the gel type flux so it does not run everywhere. I do use the so called no clean flux, but clean it off any way.

A lot of the flux has an expiration date on it,but for hobby work I have found it seems to make little difference.

Here is another person to check out on youtube for the SMD

The hot air wand works well once you get the air flow and temperature set. It helps to get some Kapton tape and use it to mask off where you do not want the hot air to go. It is real interesting to watch when you use the paste type solder and when it melts, the parts just float into position.

Really needed to remove the SMD parts.

It does take some practice and a good magnifier ( I still like the 10 power stereo scope) and good lighting, but not too bad at all with some small tools. I tries some of the inexpensive glasses type that had interchangeable lenses. Had to get so close to focus that I could only use one eye and just about burnt my nose off..

I decided to check in what Dave Jones had to say (always a good resource):

I fouled up a board from Henning when trying to make sure an smt component was well soldered and made a mess, big blob and such. Solder wick would not clean it up and I’ve never had much luck with solder wick. I’ll try your variety of wick, Gil. Thanks for the recommendation.
