I've used Simple Green on model 14 and 15 machines without problems.
I pull the motor and selector magnet, and soak in Simple Green for
about 2 days. This will degrease things. Mix and rinse with
distilled water, so that when it evaporates, there's no residue.
As long as you go from wet to dry quickly, without spending much
time in a damp state, fresh rust isn't much of a problem.
If that's not enough, it gets difficult. I restored a machine
that had been oiled with the wrong lubricant and left for a decade.
All the tight-parts were frozen. I had to use LockTite Freeze and
Release Spray to get some parts off the main shaft. Then the parts
had to be cleaned individually and reassembled.
I had to use carburetor cleaner to get the selector moving
freely. That was not fun.
One Model 14 was rusted badly enough that I had to use
Evapo-Rust. That's a chelating agent - it removes rust, but
metal. It removes oxides, so it will strip the Parkerizing
grey coat used to protect the metal. Then I used an anti-rust
spray.
