[GreenKeys] Cleaning agents...

Hi Eric,

My dad used to service teletypes back in the 1960's. I recall he used Lestoil and hot water. Sometimes he'd have me and my brother do the type baskets. These were on model 15's. Anyway, he'd put the basket in a metal pan, spray it down well with hot water, pour Lestoil over it and spread it around with a brush then let it set awhile. Then he'd spray it off with hot water again. I can't remember how he dried it out but he must have somehow. Then he lubed it up and it was ready to go.

Of course that was on machines that he was overhauling on an annual basis from 100% duty in radio and TV stations, so I can't say they were really "gunked up". As I recall the biggest amount of crud to be removed was ribbon residue. Some radio stations were cheap and purchased cotton ribbons with purple ink which made a mess of the machines.

As I got into restoring Teletype equipment in the 1990's, I used the same cleaning technique and it worked well. Some particularly challenging parts I'd have to disassemble and soak in alcohol but otherwise the hot water and Lestoil did the trick. I'd dry off the parts using a hair dryer.

-Dale

Hi!

Cleaning metal parts on a 15 or 19… I’ve seen some suggest Simple Green (I assume it’s not the industrial version if Simple Green... I hope). I’ve also seen some suggest kerosene. What else is out there???

Thanks much!

Sincerely,
Eric :)
