FWIW, the old standard for cleaning typewriters was a mixture
of kerosene with about 5% machine oil. A paint brush helps for
scrubbing. Naphtha is a powerful solvent for petroleum products
but does not attack many plastics. Pure naphtha dries without
leaving a residue. However, it is just as inflammable as gasoline
so should be used outdoors and away from any source of ignition.
It can be obtained cheaply from paint stores or at a higher price
as Ronsonol lighter fluid.
There are lots of solvents and degreasing agents, figuring
out which have the right combination of solvent spectrum, safety,
availability, etc, may not be easy.

Would it be possible to do a short soak in mineral spirits - to get to all of those hard-to-reach (impossible-to-reach) parts, or is just a spray recommended? I’m looking it over and it’s going to be an interesting task.
