Hey Chuck
I found the same model (HAL CWR6850) early last year on ebay. The item was listed as untested and in unknown condition. Because of the HAL reputation, I took the gamble and purchased the converter.
Went to an electronic store and bought the appropriate cables/connectors and hooked up 6850 to my Yaesu 450D. Found the manual online, studied for a while and fired the puppy up. Wow, what a sweet little machine that is. I made two RTTY contacts on 20 meters - think it was around 14.090.00. One contact was very short and the second one lasted for almost 15 min or so.
Than I switched over to the CW mode. Well, that was a totally different story. I don't know the code and by using this machine, you don't need to know the code. The CW decoding on the 6850 is extremely sensitive and I got only 50% out of it - the other 50% was pure gabblegabble.
The main reason why I purchased this particular unit was to copy the ITTY Europe channel (66 wpm, 50 baud) - and that works slicker than a whistle.
I am only a beginning amateur when it comes about electronics - therefore, I can't provide any help to you. Just like to share my experience with the CWR6850 with you and others.

I picked up one of these at a Ham Swap and wondered if any one has used it on the air??
Mine is missing one of the keys on the Keyboard, The key to the right of the space bar is marked FIG and then a missing key and then a blank key. This is not what is shown in the manual I have,
which is dated April of 1982. So they must have changed keyboards at some time.
The On/Off switch is also broken, altho you can still turn on the unit by pressing the damaged part of the switch. I would like to replace both of these parts. Does anyone have any information on them??
Any tricks I should know about, I plan to use it with either a TW-100 Transworld or a Sunair GSB-900DX radio.
Any info will help!!!
