And, we might add, keeping sending and receiving distributors in sync at
the ends of a wire was high technology for its day.  You can read a lot

Teletype made some synchronous sytems, but what made the company a big
success was the introduction of start-stop synchronization.  Synchronous
operation was usable only between big telegraph offices where there were
maintenance people on hand to keep the distributors running in sync.
Start-stop made printing telegraphy practical on lower-traffic circuits
where maintenance people were not stationed.
