     Keep in mind that 50Hz power was not uncommon in the US 
until perhaps the late 1950s. In the Los Angeles area we had both 
frequencies within the time I've lived out here. The Los Angeles 
Department of Water and Power, the municipally owned power 
company for the city of L.A. was 60 Hz but many smaller cities, 
such as Burbank, who had their own power companies or contracted 
with Southern California Edison, were 50Hz. Warner Brothers, 
located in Burbank, had large motor-generators to convert from 
50Hz to 60Hz for synchronous sound recording equipment. Similar 
arrangements were used by other industries needing 60Hz power. 
This changed when these areas got on the power grid and had to 
change frequencies. For the most part the 50Hz equipment could 
run at 60Hz. Made a big market for electric clocks.
