I have been making some cables and getting part of a M28 Transmitter Group
operational. It has been fascinating and fun so far. Here's a very crude
video
https://youtu.be/uzTtz3Km5tU

A complete Transmitter Group had six TDs and 3 Message ID modules - each
module would control two TDs in ping-pong fashion (you can load one TD
while the other one is transmitting). I'll try adding the second TD in the
future. I doubt if any complete Transmitter Groups have survived (except
aboard museum ships), but if so, please let me know - I'd really love to
acquire and restore more Torn Tape Relay equipment.

The Message ID module inserts a beginning of message header ZCZCNYW123
where ZCZC is Start of Message, NYW is the channel ID, and 123 the
sequential message number. The message number is automatically incremented
for each message. The characters are selected by an 8-level stepper switch
(3 control plus 5 data) and sent in parallel to the distributor portion of
a two-shaft TD (LBXD) to be serialized. After the header characters are
inserted, the stepper switch turns on the reader portion of the TD and
sends its data to the distributor. At the end of the tape, the stepper
switch resets itself to "home" by zipping through the unused positions.

Those Teletype Corp engineers sure created some amazing and fun equipment.

Cheers,
